Editorial: From Grief to Gardens
This Summer issue opens with explorations of grief and comfort in nature—“minerals of my grief” buried in the earth (Tsiang), an egg (Glickman). The cover art, Living Area, Vincents Way, by Antoinette Karuna, was created out of grief following the loss of Karuna’s father. As her artist statement explains, the piece reflects the home he created and his domestic rituals of the everyday.
Like the cover art, the poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction in this issue explore the magic of the everyday—from kittens to porcupines, from an ornament to a tumbleweed, from birthdays to “memories that unwind into / quite ordinary comings and goings” (Dueck). Some works also contemplate pain thresholds in gymnastics and in relationships. In doing so, the issue examines how to listen to your inner voice and ends with a piece on how to accept “the inevitable uprooting” (Landor).
We hope you enjoy this Summer issue.
